Good communication will make your job as a parent a lot easier. Communicate with your partner about the issues you are encountering and the parenting strategies you would like to implement. Your child will respect your authority as a parent if both parent are consistent with the values they transmit or with the punishments they use.

You should also communicate openly with your children and make them feel comfortable about coming to you if they want to talk about something that is bothering them.

Ask your children to help around the house. Give them a few simple tasks that will not take them more than a few minutes each day. They could for instance help with doing the dishes or clean the yard once a week. Reward your children for their hard work with an allowance. This will teach your children the value of work. If your children ask for an expensive item, offer to raise their allowance if they will do more around the house.

Positive reinforcement is more efficient than punishments. Reward your children for their good behavior and let them know you are proud of them.
If your children keep displaying a bad behavior, punishments such as time out or additional homework can be efficient. If you threaten your children with a punishment, you need to follow through. You will lose your authority if you make empty threats. You should talk about punishments and rewards with your partner and make sure you both use the same system.

Help your children find things they enjoy. You should stimulate your children’s intellect by telling them stories, taking them to new places and introducing them to culture. Your children will naturally develop interests for different things and you should encourage them to explore their passion.

Allow your children to develop their own interests instead of introducing them only to the things you love. Make your children feel comfortable about developing their own individuality and show interest in the things they love.

Spend plenty of quality time with your children. You should talk to your children about their day at school every night, have dinner together and plan a few activities for the weekend. Spending time with your children should be a priority even if you are very busy.

Try going on a vacation once in a while. This quality time will give you the opportunity to relax, have fun and communicate with your children. Your children will probably lose interest in spending time with you as they get older but you should still offer them to take part in a few family activities.

These tips will help you establish an excellent relationship with your children. Do the best you can and do not hesitate to ask friends, family or professionals if you have a hard time with your job as a parent.
